LSU advances with win over UNCW, faces ULL

June 1, 2015
The LSU baseball team took the lead in today's Baton Rouge Regional in the second inning and never looked back.

The Tigers beat UNC Wilmington 2 - 0 to advance to the Super Regional round of the NCAA Baseball Tournament.

LSU Pitcher Jared Poche pitched 8 and two thirds shutout innings.  He was pulled with one out to get in the top of the 9th after allowing his first extra base hit of the game, a double.

Closer Parker Bugg came in to get the final out.

Poche scattered six hits, he walked only one and struck out eight to improve his record 8-1.

Poche gave up a double to the final batter he faced in the top of the 9th. But Bugg struck out the only batter he faced for his third save of the year.
Poche got some help from center fielder Andrew Stevenson. The junior from St. Thomas More made a great diving grab in right center field in front of the warning track. He got up quickly, threw the ball back into the infield and he was able to double up the runner who was at first base.
LSU scored its only two runs in the 2nd inning. With two outs, Andrew Stevenson reached on an error. He advanced to second on a ball. Chris Chinea doubled down the left field line to score Stevenson. Jake Fraley then added another run with an RBI single to center field. Fraley was 3-for-3 at the plate. Chinea had two hits on the afternoon.

The Tigers will host ULL this weekend.

The Cajuns beat Rice 5 - 2 in the Houston Regional.
