Consequence of Sound list of chart-topping alt songs

Who grabs the top spot in Alternative songs of all time?

Over the years, alternative music has taken many shapes, some good, some not so good. But one thing has remained consistent since 1988 when Billboard started monitoring Alt Rock, music played in this genre often innovates modern sound for years to come.

Thankfully, the folks over at Consequence of Sound have compiled every single Alternative chart-topper from Billboard and they have ranked them from 1-336. If you have the time, I suggest you go through and take a look at some of the reasoning behind why the tracks landed in the order they did. Last-place Lostprophets got the nice review of "Even if Lostprophets lead singer/monstrous child rapist Ian Watkins wasn’t the most genuinely evil figure in rock music this side of Gary Glitter, “Last Train Home” would still be a saggy baby diaper of a hit single, self-important in all of its whining and rallying cries for hope."

You can view the full list on COS here, but scroll down to see where some of our favorite songs from The End landed on the list.

Among the artists with chart-topping records are Red Hot Chili Peppers for most number one hits (12) and Muse for the longest reign at number one (19 weeks for “Madness”), and consistently high performances have come from acts as wide-ranging as U2, Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, and Cage the Elephant. All in all, 336 songs have topped the chart over 28 years, with the latest being Nothing but Thieves’ “Trip Switch”, which took the top spot as we were putting this feature together.

From Consequence of Sound

97. COLD WAR KIDS - "FIRST"

Sneaking in just under the top 100 is Cold War Kids' most recent single that is just under a year old. Good for the guys who have been making a comeback since falling out of favor with critics in recent years.

35. RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - "GIVE IT AWAY"

TWELVE No. 1 hits on this list of 336 songs for RHCP is insane, but it makes a lot of sense. This, being the song that catapaulted these guys to their eventual infamy, 35 is a good spot, though not their highest in the list.

20. ARCTIC MONKEYS - "DO I WANNA KNOW"

I'm a sucker for pretty much anything Arctic Monkeys, and this is as high as they get on the chart!

08. QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE - "NO ONE KNOWS

The only No. 1 single by this band has Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and it just rocks. It could be number one, but we're just glad it made the top 10. Also, deer fighting isn't cool unless you're a rock star. Leave the deer alone.
