The Shins have released a new song and video from their yet-untitled forthcoming 2017 album, expected in January.

The last time we heard new music from The Shins was in 2012 with their fourth album Port of Morrow, which featured their hit "Simple Song."

Watch the music video for "Dead Alive" below:

"Dead Alive" features a plunky drum and bass beat and surreal music video, which plays with perspective throughout. Frontman James Mercer (also of Broken Bells) is featured as the main character throughout the video in a variety of situations. The spooky nature of the video comes just in time for Halloween.

The video is already one of my new favorites of 2016, and while I like the song, it leans pretty heavy on the classic Shins sound, which is to say it would fit in seamlessly on The Garden State soundtrack. That's not a bad thing necessarily, but I am hoping the new record explores new territory for The Shins who are known to experiment with new devices and tools to create records. We'll see what we get in January.

Let us know what you think of the new song!
