New additions to Pike Place Market will open this summer

January 31, 2017

In June, we'll finally be able to see what all the construction mess at Pike Place Market has been creating over the last couple years.

$74 million later, the MarketFront expansion brings in "30,000 square feet of open public space encompassing a public plaza and viewing deck" and will have its grand opening on Thursday, June 29,  but it's only the first phase of a massive overhaul to one of Seattle's most iconic (and most touristy) attractions.

Don't worry, with the grand opening comes 300 new COVERED parking spaces and more stalls for vendors. Did you hear that? Parking!

This expansion is just the beginning of a complete overhaul of the Seattle waterfront which will bring a cycle track, improvements to the seawall, a promenade and an expansion to the aquarium, as well as all of these other things. This all culminates in the ultimate and final demolition of the Alaskan Way Viaduct when we all become tunnel-dwellers driving through the new hole Bertha dug for us.

It takes a long time (like, a really long time) to load, but you can view the whole concept design for the waterfront right here, or look at individual pieces of the overhaul here.

Are you excited for the new and improved market experience? Let me know on Twitter.
