Star Wars releases teaser trailer for "The Last Jedi"

April 14, 2017

This is not a drill. The new Star Wars trailer for The Last Jedi is here.

During a panel for The Last Jedi featuring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill and Rian Johnson (TLJ director), the official poster for the new installment was released, then they blew everyone's minds and showed the teaser trailer TWICE.

And here's the poster:

There's something to say about the contents of the poster as well, but we'll get to that in a second.

Between the two new nuggets of info we got from the Disney masterminds, I fired up the "rampant speculation" portion of my brain and here's the result...

The Last Jedi picks up where The Force Awakens left off, with Ridley's character Rey on a remote island with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). The trailer appears to show Ridley begin training, levitating rocks and swinging around a lightsaber. It is yet to be seen if she has to carry Skywalker around on her back like Yoda.

Other things in the trailer to note:

  • Kylo Ren's smashed up mask.
  • Space battles, lots of 'em.
  • Rey sees both the light side of the force, and the dark (many speculated she was only force sensitive, but it is starting to look more like she could be full-blown Jedi)
  • Finn is still sleepin'.
  • The rebel base is getting blown up.
  • Someone is flying the Millenium Falcon, but we don't know who.
  • Luke Skywalker isn't too into the whole Jedi thing anymore

Now in the poster, Skywalker's face is directly opposite Kylo Ren's, meaning we might see an epic battle between the two. More interesting is that Rey stands below them, but her outstretched lightsaber splits the poster in two. Could Rey bring the final "balance to the force?"

Could that be what Skywalker means when he says at the end of the trailer, "It's time for the Jedi to end?"

The Last Jedi is due to be released on December 15.
