These guys ranked states by 'Freedom,' but where does Washington fall?

Uh, guys? Are we ok?

How free are you in Washington State?

You might think by being one of the first to legalize same-sex marriage and being one of four states with legalized recreational marijuana use ('sup, Alaska, Colorado, Oregon?) we might rank pretty high up there.

You would be wrong.

The Cato Institute developed a project called 'Freedom in the 50 States,' and have taken it upon themselves to rank the 50 states by factors of 'freedom' (here's their methodology). Our home state of Washington came in at a measly #32 (down only one spot from last year).

Where we get brownie points for our freedoms around marriage, pot and a lack of an income tax, we lose points over the government's use of Eminent Domain and various other fiscal policies. You can read the whole reasoning behind our poor ranking here.

A lot of the negative reasoning lies with things that you might personally think are good for the state and the people, so take the ranking with a (very large and American) grain of salt. These guys are pretty hardcore about their definition of freedom, and as one person puts it...

What do you think? Do you feel free in Washington State?

Hey, at least we aren't New York.
