We could get a Seattle NHL team sooner than you think

Before you read any further, NO, we haven't been granted an NHL team yet...

BUT, there is a group in Seattle that will start collecting season ticket deposits for as low as $500 per ticket on March 1 for a potential team that would play at a new arena on the footprint of KeyArena at Seattle Center.

Putting the cart before the horse? Well, not quite. The plan is to collect 10,000 ticket deposits to basically prove to the league that Seattle is worthy of an expansion team. While there's no arena ready and the existing plan relies heavily on the *gulp* monorail to mitigate traffic, collecting money from fans is at least one way to show the league Seattle is hockey-ready.

Don't worry, though. If an NHL team isn't eventually awarded to Seattle, your money will be refunded, though I'm not sure when the deadline for awarding the franchise is. What if you drop $500 and they award the franchise for 2050?

The group collecting the deposits is OVG-Seattle, a division of Oak View Group that won the bid to renovate KeyArena for future NBA and NHL use. You can see their plans for the new arena here.
