Eddie Vedder joins Simon Townshend on stage at Triple Door 04.23.14

April 24, 2014

Simon Townshend was rocking the faces off of a sparce crowd at the Triple Door last night with intense guitar riffs and powerful vocals through his emotional and personal songs.  I kept looking around and asking myself why there weren't more people in the venue.  Simon is the younger b rother of Pete Townshend so even if you weren't familiar with his music you've to know there are some strong musical genes in the family and that the show was going to rock....it did.

It turns out Simon has been in town for the past few days and was crashing on Eddie Vedder's couch (metaphorically speaking that is...I would image Eddie has a decent house with at least one guest room.)  Eddie said that Simon was an excellent house guest and encouraged the audience to invite him to stay at their place next time he was in town.  According to Simon's blog back in August of 2009 he jumped up and played The Real Me with Pearl Jam at the Shepherds Bush Empire, London….. he followed up by writing "but we’ve have never had a chance to play any of my songs together which Ed has expressed an interest in doing over the years. There’s a strong chance this will happen when I perform at The Triple Door."

This was powerful incentive for me to get down to the Triple Door fast.  Earlier in the evening I photographed the Ellie Goulding concert at the Paramount, hopped in a cab and raced to the venue to catch the show.  I have to say, it was a pretty incredible experience.  As mentioned, Simon was nothing short of awesome.  Just him, a guitar and a microphone.  I love to see a solo artist standing on stage singing from his soul.  There is something raw and emotional about it.  He spoke of his struggle with addiction and it seemed to hit home for many.  Near the end of the night he invited Eddie Vedder onto the stage to perform two songs with him and it was magic.  The energy was palpable.  The two friends seemed to really enjoy performing together and the audience was witness to a wonderful experience.

It was truly a night to remember.
