Getting fired up for soccer season starts this Sunday!

January 19, 2016

Last year, I got a tweet from @Girvan0, a fellow Sounders FC fellow fan, asking if I would make mention of a great event happening to raise money for the Neagle Foundation - I'm like, "duh". He told me it would be rad if I would come down and support their FIFA15 tournament. I agreed. What I discovered when I got to Renton's Berliner Pub were the happiest bunch of soccer nerds on the planet. Hours and hours of Xbox FIFA (obviously) were underway and they were itching to crown a champ. In amongst it all - Sounders FC midfielder, Lamar Neagle.

I'm not sure there is a team where the players are as connected to the local community as the Seattle Sounders FC. My brother told me the Chicago Blackhawks players are regularly partying at the bar down the street from his house but WHATEVER, MIKE.

One of the dudes responsible for the FIFA tournament, Hugo Garcia, told me that they partnered with Lamar Neagle because he's trying to give back to his community. He grew up in Federal Way and wants to help the local Boys and Girls club get more kids into soccer. The tournament, hosted by soccer podcasters @SonarFeed, will donate the money they raise to help the cause. Let's hope we get some new soccer fields built!

Last year, I showed up and shyly snooped around, donating $20 bucks to raffle tickets - up for grabs they had autographed Jerseys, soccer balls, tickets etc. The best part, I won the thing I wanted most - this scarf:

Of course, the only chance I got to say hello to Lamar involved wet hands, a crossing of paths coming out of the restroom and the most awkward behavior from yours truly... Idiot.

Now sadly, Lamar got traded to DC United and he's outta here BUT his foundation will stay rooted in Washington. The fellas from SonarFeed are back again this Sunday to play games, drink beer, and crown a new champ. Lamar can't be here bc he's moved to DC, but subbing in for him, our Sounders FC goalkeeper Stefan Frei! There are still a few spots left to enter for the tournament OR you can just come down and raise a pint to fun times and a good cause.
