So, You're In Seattle... Matt Johnson

He's the voice of Seattle Sounders FC on the radio

March 15, 2016

Matt Johnson is the 2016 season voice of Seattle Sounders FC on the radio. It’ll be up to him to paint pictures of a match constantly in motion when we can’t see it with our own eyes! He’ll also tantalize us with SSFC’s weekly web feature, Rave TV.

As Sounders FC separate themselves from the Seattle Seahawks over the course of the last several seasons, most of the changes haven’t been obvious from the outside. When they first launched as an MLS squad in 2009, the club called VMAC home, just like the Seahawks, and shared much of the same staff. It was hailed as one of the most successful team franchise launches in history, quickly putting Seattle on the world soccer map.

This season, the team are revamping the approach to the television and radio broadcasts, opting to deviate from their previous approach of having one talented announcer be simulcast for both feeds. Now, the television broadcast duties will be handled by Fox Soccer Channel’s Keith Costigan. Sounders FC fly Keith in for local matches not being covered on local broadcast television. In order to supplement bringing in an outsider on a weekly basis, the Sounders FC have chosen the North End's own Matt Johnson to handle the second part of the broadcast, he'll take on play-by-play responsibilities on the radio.

Johnson grew up in Seattle, attended Sounders FC matches back in the old school days, and knows this team’s history almost better than anyone. For years, Matt handled the pre-, post-, and halftime shows for SSFC, and having him back seems like a great fit… the one catch - it’s his first time doing play-by-play! I can't believe he's so cool about it! I guess bullish might be a better phrase - he's about that challenge, boss, but it’s fun to hear him talk about it.

He recently gave up a pretty sweet gig with the Seattle Seahawks to try out this dream job, and it's great to get to know him out of the gate!
