I Like Music, You Like Music: At The Drive-In Are Back! Here's Why You Should Care

January 21, 2016

At The Drive-In is back!  According to the band's website, new music and a tour are on the way. This is why you should care...

Back in 2000 Alternative music was in a VERY weird place. The biggest songs of the day were from Florida bro rock bands like 3 Doors Down, Godsmack and Creed(!).  Rap rock was quickly becoming a thing as well, thanks to Limp Bizkit and Korn.  It was a dark time indeed, the genre was in transition, and our poor ears were caught in the crossfire.  And then At The Drive-In happened.  Every bit as urgent and aggressive as the sound of the day, but with substance, complexity, and style.  Instead of "bla bla bla lets smash stuff bro" over drop D tuned guitars, At The Drive-In was more like "The system is F'd, what is this planet we are on?" over punk meets emo meets prog. They were completely original. They were who you discovered after you discovered The Deftones.  Most importantly, they were REAL. At The Drive-In rules for a lot of reasons, here are a few of them...

Truly one of my favorite songs of all time. One of the few songs that the rockers and the punks and the art kids all liked. This is At the Drive-In at their finest. Plus the video shows footage of their live show, which is absolutely mental.

Speaking of live shows, check this out. THESE DUDES ARE NUTS!

When At the Drive-In split, they formed 2 separate groups. One of them being The Mars Volta. SO weird but so awesome.  This is Cedric and Omar creating music unchecked and unwilling to compromise their sound to fit in any box. Lots of it was probably a little too far out there, but The Widow is a jam.

The other At the Drive-In offspring was Sparta.  While Omar and Cedric were off experimenting with music and drugs, the rest of the guys stuck together and formed Sparta.  Closer in sound to At the Drive-In for sure, but not quite, which was their downfall, since everytime you listened to them all you could think about what how much you wished ATDI were still together.

The best part of At the Drive-In is......CEDRIC BIXLER-ZAVALA IS CRAZY.  MENTAL. NUTS. THE BEST!!!

At the Drive-In is playing the Showbox Sodo this June. I'll see you there!!!
