SXSW Day 2: Where's the coffee?

Manley recaps Day Two of SXSW

March 18, 2016

Greetings from Austin, Texas and the South By Southwest Music Festival, the epicenter of the music world for the next few days. Since I like music and you like muaic (and someone was dumb enough to give me all access passes to everything) I thought it would be cool to share my experience with you.

10 Things from day 2 at SXSW

  1. Seattle has a coffee shop on every corner. Austin doesn't. This is becoming a problem.

  2. I had lunch with Declan McKenna. That kid has a big future and it's impressive to watch him deal with everything that comes with it.

  3. Trying to drive anywhere in the vicinity of SXSW is a practice in futility. I ended up missing a Jake Bugg performance because traffic was mental. That sucked, but on the upside, Brian Fallon from Gaslight Anthem was up next. I will always have a soft spot for that band.

  4. I am in such a vortex here that I completely forgot yesterday was St. Patrick's Day AND the start of March Madness. I only saw 17 seconds of basketball yesterday....my man card is in jeopardy.

  5. Trying to explain inside jokes is exhausting.

  6. Barns Courtney is a star! Had a chance to meet him at Hotel St. Cecilia (yeah, that one) and was totally impressed. It's funny talking to him because he grew up in America (in Seattle) and then moved to the UK, his accent sometimes changes mid-sentence.

  7. I don't know of how I got invited to a fancy wine dinner at a Michelin Star restaurant with some of the most influential radio people in the country, but boy was I glad I did! Great food, great conversation, and great wine. Sometimes I need to pinch myself to make sure these amazing experiences aren't all in my head, I am a very lucky and grateful boy...Hey speaking of pinch me moments....

  8. I want to a house party where Yannis from Foals was the bartender and CAGE THE ELEPHANT was the entertainment!!!!!  It was just like every house party you went to in college; too many people, not enough space, too hot, groups of pretty girls you're too chicken to talk to, someone passed out in the bushes in the front yard, it was all there. The only difference was the band playing in the living room happened to be one that's usually selling out arenas. It felt like a movie!

  9. I had another surprise band moment last night as I showed up somewhere to watch the Kills and was greeted by the sounds of Bloc Party. Silent Alarm is one of my favorite albums of all time, I still don't get how this band never really made it big.

  10. SXSW after hours is shady and gross.

TL;DR

Who I Saw: Banners / Brian Fallon / Barns Courtney / Cage the Elephant / Bloc Party / The Kills

Best Band of Day Two: Barns Courtney

Noms: Chicken tacos / fancy Asian fusion dinner / comically big slice of late night pizza

Best Noms: This bite of pork belly tasted like candy and melted in my mouth. Incredible

Plan for Day Three: There are only two things I MUST do today and they are seeing Beach Slang and DZ Deathtays...oh and Barns Courtney again
