Your Song Changed My Life - With AWOLNATION

June 17, 2016

I like music, you like music and of course, your favorite bands like music as well.

"What song changed your life?"

I was asked this question a few weeks ago and it has stuck with me ever since. Music is such an amazing thing, from how it can turn smiles to tears or take you from your car to half-way across the world with just a few notes, that I became fascinated with finding out what other people's chosen songs were. This week, I asked Summer Camp 2016 headliner AWOLNATION the same question and this is how Mr. AWOL himself, Aaron Bruno, answered

AWOLNATION (Aaron Bruno): "The song that changed my life was Nirvana's cover of Leadbelly's "Where did you sleep last night." I was already deep into all of Nirvana's world and influences, but the night that their "Unplugged" premiered, they closed their set with that cover. I remember hoping that he would go to a higher octave on the last chorus to belt it out in the way only Kurt could. Of course, he did exactly that, and it zapped me into an endless search for that emotion from that point on. It was a perfect example of the simplicity and depth of their sound, even though it was a cover song! I stayed up all night trying to figure out how to play it on my guitar based off memory. The next morning, I was a zombie as I crawled into first period class as a freshman in high school."

That would be a PERFECT song to end SummerCamp 2016 with!

What song changed your life?
