One Tank Trips: Best spots in Portland for a day trip down south

What does the city down south have to offer?

Believe it or not, while Portland may seem far away, it's pretty easy to make it there and back in a day while still experiencing some of the best the Rose City has to offer (obviously the Portland Timbers are not one of those things, but plenty of other things, we promise).

Snugly built between Willamette River to the east and the Tualatin Mountains to the west, downtown Portland has plenty to keep you entertained all day. If you're down for a trip down I-5 and some adventuring, Portland is your spot.

Here are a few spots for you to hit while you explore the Rose City:

1. Explore the Pearl District

An area so jam-packed with stuff to do that it's hard to narrow down the one thing you should do. Put on your walking shoes and explore the different bars, breweries, boutiques and book stores it has to offer. Grab a hand-crafted cocktail at the Annex, then a signature brew from Bridgeport Brewing and pop over the the infamous and huge Powell's Books. You could spend all day in this tiny but dense portion of the city.

But...

2. Eat the better donuts at Blue Star

Friday Tip - all Portland shops are now serving a special @coavacoffee blend! #upyourgame #coffee #bluestardonuts #donutsforgrownups #caffeine #pnw sweet shot thanks to the talented @carly.e.diaz

Yeah, yeah, you know about Voodoo Doughnut in Portland because who doesn't, right? Well there is arguably a better donut in Portland and it's at Blue Star Donuts. There are three different locations and although there are still lines, they are significantly shorter and the donuts even tastier-er.

3. Tear up Burnside Skatepark

Waky waky, yanks and bacy! Dirt (@dieerte) with some heat coming off the elbow wall's top ropes! Both truck - yank in, captured by @originalbk @151skateboards @powerriderwheels @ojwheels @blackmarketskates @independenttrucks

Are you inclined to find the best spots to board in the Northwest? Did you grow up playing a bunch of Tony Hawk Pro Skater like me? If you answered yes to either of those questions, you're going to want to hit up this legendary skatepark located underneath the Burnside Bridge. You best bring your A-game, though, and if you unlock the spidey costume, please do "whatever a spider can."

4. Take a brew tour

They call Portland "Beervana" for a reason. While we might have the better brews of the Northwest here in Seattle and Bellingham, Portland is known for being one of the most brewery-dense areas in the United States with 58 pubs to call its own. With so much beer and so little time, find a guide to show you the best watering holes in the town, enjoy the local fare and grab a sixer for the following weekend when you come back home.

5. Relax at the Japanese Gardens

Before you leave, take some time to relax at the stunning Japanese Garden, which is painstakingly cared for by a small staff of volunteer gardeners.
