Paul McCartney with Nirvana @ Safeco Field! 07.19.13

July 20, 2013

In 1963 my Grandfather Mike took my then 13 year old Mother Linda to the record store at 5am to wait in line for the Beatles debut album Please Please Me.  Needless to say she was and is crazy about the Beatles.  When I was born many, many years later ;) Beatles songs were such an influencial and important part of her life and thus they became important to me.

Fast forward 50 years to July 19, 2013.  The concert at Safeco Field is impossible to describe.  You will get an idea from the photos and videos but to be there with over 46,000 people sharing such an intense experience was not like any concert or event I have ever been to.  Uninhibited singing, dancing, crying, sharing and loving with tens of thousands of people could almost be described as a religious experience.  I was personally overwhelmed with emotion.

I mentioned my Mom at 13 being crazy about the Beatles.  One of the best parts of the Safeco concert for me was knowing that my 13 year old niece Athena was in the audience sharing the same exuberant feelings my Mom had at the same age.  Athena is absolutely crazy in love with Paul McCartney.  She bragged to me after the show that she had only sobbed for the first 4 songs and was then able to regain her composure and only cry for different parts of the rest of the show.  This was not an easy task she said.  Her favorite song of the night was Helter Skelter though her favorite parts of the show were the touching dedications to John and George and the all around sassiness that Paul was showing throughout the night.

As if Paul McCartney wasn't enough on his own.  The 2nd song into the first encore Paul brought out none other than Dave Grohl, Pat Smear and Krist Novoselic for an epic reunion of the remaining members of Nirvana.  They opened with "Cut Me Some Slack" and went on to play Beatles tunes such as "Get Back" and as mentioned above "Helter Skelter."  I have no words.  It was just absolutely mind bending.  This was without question the most surreal event I have ever witnessed on a stage.  True rock and roll history was made right before our eyes.

I had to put in a shot of one of my favorite people in the world "Tits McGee" of Gutter Glitter and my beautiful niece Athena who had the time of their lives!

Sir Paul:  71?!?  Are you kidding me????
