I like to eat. A lot. Food is bae. So I figured I would post little reviews of the places I go, to give you a little insight and maybe some ideas on where you might want to nom with your friends or special someones. Plus it gives me an excuse to pig out on Seattle's best eats and not feel bad about it, because work! Before we start though, I want to make one thing perfectly clear, I am NOT a professional food nerd, nor do I want to be. I dont know the intricacies of French cooking. Heck, I dont even know how to spell "intricacies." It also means that if you ask me what the best burger is, I'll probably say Lil Woody's before I suggest any kind of "gourmet" burger, unless that gourmet burger has an egg on it. Then gourmet burger wins (any burger with an egg on it wins really.) Also, my idea of a fancy pizza is anything with more than 2 toppings. Basically what I'm getting at is consider these restaurant reviews for the comman man/woman. Got it? Good, let's roll!!!

RESTAURANT - The Carlile Room
ADDRESS - 820 Pine Street

I've been meaning to check out Tom Douglas's latest (I think?) offering forever and FINALLY got around to it yesterday.  I had really high hopes because, being so close to the Paramount, I was looking forward to it being my go to place for pre concert noms.  How was the meal? Glad you asked. Here we go....

APPS

Duckfat Hush Puppies.  This is what you call getting things started with a bang.  I could eat nothing but hush puppies for an entire meal and have absolutely no problem with it. And that's just the regular variety. At the Carlile Room, they deep fry theirs in duckfat and then serve them with duck liver mousse, jam, and pickled veggies.  In case you didn't know, frying food in duckfat makes anything 7500% better, its science!  This was SO good.

Chantrelles- As I've previously stated multiple times, if you put an egg on anything, I'm sure to like it.  This was no exception.  The morbier cheese metled on top of the egg was also a nice touch and good compliment to the shrooms.

PLANTS

Pan Roasted Brussels Sprouts- At this point, I've had brussels sprouts cooked and presented in just about every imaginable way, shape, and form, so nothing really blows me away anymore.  That said, I will order them EVERY time I have the chance, because I love them. Loved em since day 1, don't you dare call me a food hipster!!

Creamed Spinach- The earliest memory I think I have is of my great uncle John coming to my house with one of those cookies where they draw Cookie Monster or something on it with frosting and telling me that if I ate my spinach I would grow up big and strong AND get to eat the cookie.  Well, that sounded like a great idea at the time, and it still does.  This was done perfectly.  It was creamy but not drowning in it, wilted but not bitter. SO GOOD.  Oddly enough, there were also button mushrooms hiding under the spinach, and to be honest, those were the best bites of food I had the entire meal.  I honestly would go back just for a bowl of them.

MEATS

Anderson Valley Leg of Lamb- Lamb is a staple of many cuisines across the world, but for some reason its not that common here in the US.  Everytime I have it I feel like a real fancy boy, and that's always fun.  The Carlile room puts anchovies on theirs, along with some capers and herb sauce.  I thought that was a little weird, as I am mostly a protein segregationist, but those salty little fish really added a nice dynamic to the the dish.  If im being critical, it was a little dry, which makes sense, because lamb.

You ever have a meal that you expect to be great, had no problems with, enjoyed thoroughly, and yet somehow walked away feeling somewhat underwhelmed?  I feel that is the perfect recap of my experience at The Carlile Room.  I have nothing bad to say about the place, hush puppies were legit and those mushrooms were off the charts good, and yet while I'd certainly go back if invited, I don't see myself suggesting or craving it any time soon.  I'm so on the fence about it I almost think I should go back just to see if I can make a proper decision one way or the other.  No one likes a wishy washy review guy.  Its like getting a limp handshake.  SO DISAPPOINTING.  That said.....

On a scale of 1-10 duckfat hush puppies, I give The Carlile Room 6-10 duckfat hush puppies

FINAL VERDICT- #ManleyUndecided (I'm sorrrrry!!!)
