#sEATtle - Chop Shop

I like to eat.  A lot.  Food is bae.  So I figured I would post little reviews of the places I go, to give you a little insight and maybe some ideas on where you might want to nom with your friends or special someones.  Plus it gives me an excuse to pig out on Seattle's best eats and not feel bad about it, because work! Before we start though, I want to make one thing perfectly clear, I am NOT a professional food nerd, nor do I want to be.  I dont know the intricacies of French cooking.  Heck, I dont even know how to spell "intricacies." It also means that if you ask me what the best burger is, I'll probably say Lil Woody's before I suggest any kind of "gourmet" burger, unless that gourmet burger has an egg on it. Then gourmet burger wins (any burger with an egg on it wins really.) Also, my idea of a fancy pizza is anything with more than 2 toppings, and nothing makes me angrier than when someone tries putting anything.  Basically what I'm getting at is consider these restaurant reviews for the comman man/woman. Got it? Good, let's roll!!!

They call it The Garden Party.  I call it a glass of bourbon covered by a snowball.  Bourbon, mint, herbs, powdered sugar.  Basically, its a mint julip, so if those are your thing, you'll dig it.  Personally, I prefer my brown liquor the way most of my dates end up- as cold as possible, so this hit the mark for me. 


Burrata! I should probably put this out there right now. I am from Wisconsin.  I am also Italian.  Put cheese on anything and I will probably like it.  What I'm trying to say is that this was awesome.  The cheese was great but the real MVP was those tomatos. SO sweet!

Gulf Prawns, with Northwest bordelaise, local peas, purslane, grilled toast,and smoked trout roe. When I was a kid growing up, I thought shrimp were the fanciest things you could ever eat. Then I heard about prawns and thought they were even fancier versions of shrimp.  Well, I've grown up a lot since then, and to be honest, I'm pretty over shrimp/prawns, but these were good. Our waiter suggested we let the bread soak until the very end before attacking it.  He was right. Really good!

Grilled octopus on top of fingerling potatos, with pickled leeks, red chimichurri, and squid ink aoli.  I have a little saying when it comes to what I will eat and what I won't and that is "If it comes from the sea, its for me." Except scallops, hate em for some reason.  Anyway, octopus freaks a lot of people, with the tentacles and suction cups and what not.  I get it.  Its too bad though, because octopus is actually really good.  And when its done right.....INCREDIBLE.  Doing it right, however, is not the easiest thing in the world.  Most octopus ive had either falls in 2 categories, just a little too tough, or just a little too grilled, but not this dish.  I can honestly say that, without a shadow of a doubt, Chop Shop's grilled octopus is the best I have ever had.  The texture was perfect, the char was just right, and the squid ink aoli was amazing. 


Chop Shop, in the new Chophouse Row on Capitol Hill looks a lot like every other hip new Seattle restaurant popping up all over the city, and still seems to be a bit of a work in progress mostly due to the fact that the development isn't quite complete yet. That said, you can tell they are well on their way to a beautiful and successful establishment. If I'm being honest (which I usually am, sometimes to a fault), until the octopus came out I thought the meal was tell your friends good but not yell at your friends to go there immediately good. But then that octopus took it to another level. It really is one of those "must get" items. I woke up the next morning thinking about it, its that good.  

We'll start these by going on a scale of 1-5 spicy meatballs, since any respectable food blog has to have some sort of corny rating system.  Spicy meatballs being the choice measurement because 1) again, I'm Italian 2) Meatballs are the best! and 3) a restaurant in town named their gnocchi and meatball dish after me (sup Gnocchi Bar!)

I give Chop Shop 4 spicy meatballs out of 5, thanks to that amazing grilled octopus. SO GOOD.
